Faulty Thermostats – To Repair or to Replace?

|

Winter in Alabama is not usually severe, but keeping your Millbrook home comfortably warm (or cool in the summer) is still important, and a malfunctioning HVAC system can put leave you out in the cold. Typical problems with HVAC systems are; dirty ductwork or filters, insufficient insulation, or faulty wiring. But one thing that can throw the whole system off is a faulty thermostat. Thermostats can fail for many reasons, and sometimes you’ll need to call the professionals, but it is possible you may be able to solve your issue on your own. Learn about some of the common issues and what you can do to mitigate them.

Common Thermostat Failures

Modern digital thermostats will sometimes require a battery to operate. If you are unable to operate your thermostat you may want to check the battery before you make a service call. In terms of common issues with easy fixes, a dead battery can be all that is standing between you and a perfectly conditioned home. If you do not have a battery powered thermostat, it may be that a breaker or a fuse got tripped somehow, so again, checking the fuse box before calling a service tech may save you a bundle. Additionally dust in the mechanism, blockages on or near the sensors, and other small malfunctions can hamper the effectiveness and function of your thermostat. It can be a good idea to try and remove dust and blockages before calling a professional to come service your unit. However if you are at all unsure about what needs attention, the good people at AirNow can inspect your equipment and help recommend solutions.

Mercury Thermostats

Older thermostats use a mercury balancing system to regulate heating (as the room heats, the mercury flows into a balancing reservoir and once a certain room temperature is reached, the reservoir gets heavy and drops, breaking the circuit and shutting off the heat). These thermostats are not in common production anymore, and are typically only found in older homes. Because of this, they may suffer from wiring issues, leaky mercury reservoirs, or simple mechanical failure of the moving parts. It is usually a good idea to replace these thermostats regardless of their functionality level, but especially if yours breaks down. The efficiency of newer systems will be a huge benefit to your utility bills, and (once properly and safely disposed), the absence of the heavy metal mercury will make your home just that much safer for occupants.
